Switching

From the paper log.

The sign-in sheet works until someone asks who was in the building last Tuesday, or the fire alarm goes and the sheet is inside. The move is small; the change in what you can answer is not.

  1. Keep the sheet for a week.
Put it next to the keyboard. On day one some visitors will reach for it; let them, and enter them afterwards. By day three nobody does.
  2. Get a webcam if the desk does not have one.
Any USB webcam will do. The photo is what makes the badge worth wearing and the evacuation list worth printing.
  3. Print badges only if you will check them.
A badge nobody looks at is a sticker. If the building does not have a habit of looking, start without printing and add it when the habit exists.
  4. Decide on the screening response in advance.
The registry check runs on the free plan too. The first match will happen on an ordinary day; the desk should already know what to do.
  5. Enter regulars once.
Parents, contractors, the delivery driver. Afterwards they check in by name. This is what makes the desk faster than the sheet rather than slower.
  6. Print one evacuation PDF in the first week.
So the person who runs drills has held it before they need it.

There is no comparison to make here; the sheet is free too. The difference is what you can answer afterwards.
